People often ask for a weekly clean and are surprised when we suggest starting with a deep clean instead. It sounds like an upsell. It is not — it is the difference between two genuinely different jobs, and getting the order wrong is the single most common reason a house on a cleaning schedule still never feels quite right.
A regular clean is designed to hold a standard. It covers what a week puts back: kitchen surfaces, the stovetop, the sink, bathrooms sanitised, floors vacuumed and mopped, dusting, beds, trash. It is built to be done thoroughly in a predictable amount of time, on the same day every week, so the house never drifts.
A deep clean is designed to create that standard. It goes after everything a weekly visit is not built to reach: inside the oven and the refrigerator, behind and underneath appliances, grout rather than tile, the hard-water build-up on shower glass and fixtures, baseboards, door frames, switch plates, handles, light fittings, vents, blinds, ceiling fans, the tops of cabinets and doors, and window sills and tracks. None of that is weekly work. All of it is what people are actually seeing when they say a house does not feel clean even though it was cleaned on Tuesday.
The reason the order matters is arithmetic. If a house has two years of build-up in it and you start with weekly visits, every visit spends its time on this week's mess and none of it on the two years underneath. The backlog never moves. Start with a deep clean and the backlog is gone in one job — after that a weekly visit is doing exactly what it was designed for, and it stays ahead easily.
So when do you actually need a deep clean? Before a routine schedule starts, in almost every case. Before or after a move, in both directions — nobody wants to inherit someone else's kitchen, and nobody wants to lose a deposit over one. After illness in the house. After a renovation, though if there was real construction involved that is a post-construction clean and a different job again. Before hosting, if the house has to be right rather than tidy. And once or twice a year even on a good weekly schedule, because a handful of things — oven, refrigerator, grout, blinds, vents — accumulate on a slower cycle than a week no matter how well the weekly visit is done.
The one thing worth being honest about is time. A deep clean on a house that has not had one takes considerably longer than a regular visit, and any quote that treats them as the same job with a different label is quoting one of them wrong. We walk the property first for exactly that reason, and you get one written price for the whole job before anybody starts.
If you are not sure which one your home needs, the useful question is not how dirty it looks. It is whether the last few cleans left it looking better each time, or just the same again. If it is the same again, there is a backlog, and a weekly visit is not going to be the thing that clears it.
